I love a good story. One of my most pleasurable pastimes is grabbing a book to take to the beach and getting lost in it. When the stories take place in locations that you are familiar with, and have visited, it just makes the fiction come alive. There are some great Florida mystery writers; James W. Hall, Tim Dorsey, Carl Hiaasen, John D. McDonald, and others, that have helped me escape the routine and jump into an adventure. We are lucky here on Sanibel and Captiva islands that we have some very gifted local authors that are producing some fast-paced mysteries set on these very islands and around the world that you will love to read.
Randy Wayne White author of the Doc Ford novels has just released Night Moves the latest in his “Doc Ford” series, Doc is a marine biologist based on Sanibel Island and former CIA operative that often finds himself and his “free-spirited” friend Tomlinson embarking on pulse-pounding adventures through-out the islands and Central America. Randy has also started a new series(I hope) with his first Hannah Smith novel Gone.
Randy was a fishing guide for many years here on Sanibel at Tarpon Bay Marina and draws on his many “real” charter stories to spin some colorful characters into his books. He is also associated with the popular Doc Ford’s Sanibel Rum Bar and Grille, located here on Sanibel Island.
Ron Base is a Canadian writer who is a frequent visitor on the islands, he has been a newspaper reporter, magazine contributor, playwright, and novelist. He has lived all over the world; Toronto, Paris, Rome, and Los Angeles. His central character is Tree Callister of the Sanibel Sunset Detective series(3 books so far). Tree is a delightfully flawed character working as a private detective on normally quiet Sanibel Island. These books are action-packed, fast-paced, page turners that take you on an adventure not only around our islands and Fort Myers but to the Florida Keys and even Paris! His latest is Another Sanibel Sunset Detective.
I highly recommend these novels to be a fun and easy “beach read”. Please feel free to suggest other authors and titles that you have read and enjoyed at the pool or beach.
